The Alabama Aviation
Hall of Fame was established by The Alabama Legislature in 1975. It
is a non-profit organization, and is financially self-supporting,
receiving no funds from any governmental body. Its Board of Directors
receive no compensation. The Board members are appointed as follows:
Two appointed by the Governor of Alabama, one each by the Mayors of
Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile, and one by the Director
of The Southern Museum of Flight.
Persons elected to The Hall of Fame are selected by The Board from
the files of nominees that have been presented to The Board by interested
members of the public. Anyone can nominate a candidate, and the public
is encouraged to do so. The first inductees were elected in 1981 and
the last in 2003. Induction banquets have been held at regular intervals
for the induction ceremonies. They are held at Birmingham.
