Steadham
Acker was an internationally known aviation consultant, promoter
and air show director. Born March 1896, Gadsden, Alabama. Naval
aviator and instructor during World War I. First manager of Birmingham
Municipal Airport, 1931-1944. Actively promoted aviation locally
and nationally. Organizer and first president of Birmingham Aero
Club, 1932. Managed 13 national air carnivals which attracted
up to 20,000 spectators in one day. Directed outstanding air shows
in other U.S. cities and in Great Britain and Argentina. Was presented
Birmingham's "Man of the Year" trophy by Eddie Rickenbacker,
1944. Directed campaign resulting in law for unification of U.S.
Armed Services. Died October 22, 1952. Inducted into Alabama Aviation
Hall of Fame in 1984.
