George F. Epps
was born in 1927 to a pioneer aviation family in Athens, Georgia.
In 1944, Epps entered the Navy V-5 program, graduating from Duke
University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After completing
his graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute
of Technology, Epps was employed as a design engineer with Douglas
and Lockheed Aircraft Corporations and was involved in the design
layout of numerous supersonic military aircraft. In 1953, Epps
became Chief Engineer and later Vice-President of Brown Engineering
in Huntsville and worked in support of the NASA Explorer, Apollo
Lunar, and Space Shuttle programs as well as the United States
Army Missile Command. In 1960, Epps established Epps Airpark,
home to numerous general aviation and antique aircraft. An instrument
rated pilot with more than 10,000 hours of flight time, Epps owns
several rare antique aircraft, some of which are on permanent
display at the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham. Along
with his brothers, Epps established several general aviation firms
including Epps Aviation, Epps Aircraft and Technical Micronics
Control, Inc. George F. Epps has resided in Huntsville for more
than fifty years.
