Lt.
Colonel Fitzhugh L. Fulton, Jr.'s distinguished career included
pilot duty with the military, with NASA, and with private industry.
After attending Auburn University, he joined the Army Air Corps
in Montgomery in 1943. He flew 225 Berlin Airlift missions in
the C-54, and logged 55 combat sorties over North Korea in the
B-26. As a test pilot, his experimental flight testing included
flying the B-58, the XB-70, the YF-12, and the NASA B-747 Space
Shuttle carrier. He also performed first flights on several turbine
powered aircraft for a private research program. Fulton has logged
more than 17,000 hours in 240 aircraft types. His honors include
4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 5 Air Medals, the Harmon Trophy
as the "World's Outstanding Aviator for 1962", and the
Ivan C. Kincheloe Award as "Test Pilot of the Year"
in 1977. Fulton is currently a nominee to the National Aviation
Hall of Fame.
