Daniel
Haughton was born in Walker County, Alabama in 1911. He was Valedictorian
of West Jefferson High School in 1929, and graduated from the
University of Alabama in 1933. His aviation career began in 1936
when he began working with the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation
in San Diego. In 1944 he became the Assistant General Works Manager
of Lockheed, and was named Vice President and general Manager
of Lockheed's Georgia Division in 1952. Haughton became President
of the Lockheed Corporation in 1961, and served as Chairman of
the Board from 1967 until his retirement in 1976. A fervent champion
and esteemed leader, he oversaw development of such famous aircraft
as the high altitude U-2 and SR-71 rconnaissance aircraft, the
C-5 and C-130 military transports, and the L-1011 Tri-Star commercial
jetliner. He was elected into the National Aviation Hall of Fame
in 1987. he died in 1987.
