Pioneer
pilot, fixed base operator, airline executive. Born in North Augusta,
SC. Moved to Alabama in 1938. Founded Southern Airways as fixed
base operator at Birmingham Municipal Airport. By 1939 operations
included five additional cities. Operations expanded to becomeone
of the largest FBO networks in the U.S. Established military contract
flying schools which trained more than 25,000 military pilots
during World War II. Decorated by the British government for training
RAF pilots. Organized local service airline with inaugural flight
Atlanta to Birmingham in 1949. Under his leadership for 30 years
the service expanded to 17 states and other stations outside the
U.S. In 1979 Southern Airways merged with North Central Airline
to form Republic Airlines.
