The historic success of "Chappie" James' aviation career started in Tuskegee, Alabama, where he was a flight instructor for black Aviation Cadets being trained by the Army Air Corps at Moton Field. "Chappie" was graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1942. In 1943 he was awarded the silver wings of a military pilot. He served as a distinguished combat fighter pilot in Korea and Viet Nam. In 1975 "Chappie" James became the first black in history to become a four star general. He retired from the Air Force on February 1, 1978 and died on February 25 the same year. The General Daniel "Chappie" James Center on the Tuskegee University campus was inspired by his many contributions to aviation.
