Born
in Wilsonville, Alabama in 1902. Fermon Stone graduated from
Army Air Corps flight training at Brooks Field, Texas in 1926.
He joined Pitcairn Aviation in 1927 as one of the country's
first airmail pilots wher he flew the original airmail route
between New York and Atlanta and inaugurated airmail service
between Atlanta and Jacksonville in 1928. Later that year he
was hired by Eastern Airlines as one of that company's original
pilots.
During
World War II he operated a flight school to train military transport
pilots destined for service in China. He served as Chief Pilot
for Eastern Airlines and retired in 1962 as Vice-President of
Flight Operations after 34 years of service.
