Born
in Wirsitz, Germany. Received Ph.D. in Physics at University of
Berlin in 1924. Director of Peenemunde Rocket Center during World
War II. Moved his team of rocket specialists to Alabama in 1950.
Director of group which developed first guided missile systems.
Responsible for successful launch of Western World's first satellites
and manned space vehicles. Director of George C. Marshall Space
Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama during historic period 1960-1970
whcih accomplished the launch of the lunar orbit vehicles and
manned landings on the moon. Received numerous awards for pioneering
role in rocketry and space exploration. Distinguished member of
National Space Hall of Fame and National Aviation Hall of Fame.
Maintained Air Transport Pilot rating until retirement.
