South's Aviation History Up Close at Birminghams Southern Museum
of Flight!
Birmingham, AL. Welcome to the world of vintage
aircraft, awesome engines, world-class models and legendary aviation pioneers!
Eight decades of aviation history await you at the Southern Museum of
Flight.
You will see the machines that helped the world take to the skies. Aircraft
on display include one of Delta Air Line's first planes, a Huff Daland
crop duster, a 1912 Curtiss Pusher replica, a Wright Flyer replica, a
Fokker DVII, an A-12 Blackbird and F- 4 jet fighter.
But we're more than just aircraft. The museum also houses aviation memorabilia,
including WWI German fighter pilot gloves, a landing light used by the
Wright Brothers at their Montgomery flying school, artifacts from the
Flying Tigers of World War II, and a spectacular hand-built
eleven foot model of the WWII aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, youll find an entire library
in the museum's hundreds of historic photos. The images include Birmingham's
first flying fields, the Alabama Air National Guard, women in aviation
and the famed Tuskegee Airmen. The Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame at the
museum honors those who have made an outstanding contribution to aviation
in Alabama.
The Kids Hangar allows even the youngest pilot to try his wings. In addition,
groups can investigate what makes an airplane fly at one of the museum's
Just Plane Science & History programs or tours. Families can enjoy
a Just Plane Fun Saturday public program or schedule a birthday party.
Programs include Paper Planes, Experimental Gliders, Kite Making, Model
Building, I Wanna To Be A Pilot, and Learn to Fly activities.
